Welland’s boat rental program will begin next Saturday; reservation system used

Response to the Welland Boat Rental Program reservation system launched on Friday was terrific, said recreation and culture director Richard Dalton.

“We think people are looking for outdoor recreational activities to participate in as the weather improves,” said Dalton.

The Welland Park Rotary Club rental program opens Saturday, June 19.

Dalton said the program only runs on weekends in June from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. with rentals of one hour and 30 minutes between each rental.

“This gives the attendants time to help those returning to the dock and clean up the used equipment before the next booking group arrives.”

He said that until further notice, the program is only available by reservation.

In July and August, it operates on weekdays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends. In September, the program switches to weekends only from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“As we move forward on the roadmap for the reopening, this will be reviewed and adjusted accordingly.”

Dalton said the facility’s equipment – kayaks, canoes, SUPs and paddle boats – is a mix of the old location on Thorold Road and newly purchased for the Rotary Park opening.

Also new is a kayak launching ramp installed last week and which will remain in place for the rest of the season.

“The program has priority launch use, and the public can launch their kayaks outside of program hours,” said Dalton.
